Where Did This Image Come From?
Three routes answer three different questions: who published it first, what made it, and where it was captured. Run all three, because any one of them can be missing.
Start here. Upload the image and we read everything the file itself carries: the signed origin record, the capture metadata, any invisible watermark, and a pixel-level check of whether it was AI-generated. Route 1. Reverse image search — who published it first
This is the route that finds other copies of the picture, and it is usually the fastest way to catch a photo being reused with a false caption. Drop the image into Google Lens, TinEye (which can sort by oldest) or Bing Visual Search.
What the answers mean:
- An older copy exists. The earliest one is usually the source. A photo dated years before the story it now illustrates is being reused.
- It appears on a stock site. The picture is licensed stock, not a candid photo of the event or person it is attached to.
- It appears nowhere. Weak evidence on its own. It can mean the image is genuinely new, or that it was generated, or simply that the crop defeats the search. Move to routes 2 and 3.
We do not run reverse image search ourselves, and no tool that only reads the file can. It is a web-wide index problem, not a file problem.
Route 2. Content Credentials — what made it
Content Credentials are a cryptographically signed record, defined by the C2PA standard, that some cameras and AI tools attach when they save a file. When present, they are the strongest origin evidence available: they name the signing tool or organisation, list the actions applied, and cannot be quietly rewritten without breaking the signature.
OpenAI, Adobe Firefly and Photoshop, Google, Microsoft and newer Leica, Nikon and Sony cameras attach them today. Route 3. EXIF metadata — where and when it was captured
A camera or phone writes EXIF into the file at the moment of capture: make and model, date and time, lens and exposure, and often GPS coordinates. The EXIF viewer lists every field, converts GPS to a map link, and shows which software last saved the file.
This answers when and where rather than who published it. A date that contradicts the caption, or GPS in a different country, settles a lot of arguments on its own. If the Software field names an editor, the edited photo detector reads the edit history in full.
Putting the three together

When every route comes back empty
This is normal, not a dead end. Screenshots discard everything, and Facebook, Instagram, X and WhatsApp strip EXIF and Content Credentials on upload. A file with no origin data has been through a platform; that is all it tells you.
Two things still work. The pixel-level check above does not depend on metadata at all. And asking the sender for the original file rather than a forward or a screenshot often restores everything at once. For the wider set of checks, see how to tell if a photo is fake.
Frequently asked questions
Where did this image come from?
There are three ways to find out, and they answer different questions. A reverse image search finds earlier copies and tells you where the picture has appeared before. Content Credentials, if the file still carries them, are a signed record of which tool or camera made it. EXIF metadata records the camera, date and sometimes the location of the original capture. Run all three, because any one of them can be missing.
How do I find the original source of a photo?
Start with a reverse image search on Google Lens, TinEye or Bing Visual Search, sorted by oldest where the tool allows it. The earliest copy is usually the source, though not always. Then read the file itself: our EXIF viewer shows capture data and our Content Credentials checker shows any signed origin record.
Can you tell who made an image?
Only when the file says so. Content Credentials name the signing tool or organisation, and EXIF can name the camera and the editing software. If both are stripped, which is normal for anything downloaded from social media, the file itself cannot tell you who made it and a reverse image search is the remaining route.
Does wedetect do reverse image search?
No. We read what is inside the file: metadata, Content Credentials, invisible watermarks, and the pixel-level AI check. For searching the web for other copies, use Google Lens, TinEye or Bing Visual Search. The two approaches answer different halves of the question and work best together.
Why does my image have no origin information at all?
Because it was re-saved. Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp and most messaging apps strip EXIF and Content Credentials on upload, and a screenshot discards everything. That tells you the file has been through a platform, not that it is fake. The pixel-level AI check still works on a stripped file.
