A phone writes the exact time, the device model and often the GPS coordinates of where you stood into every photo. Editing software adds its own history. Newer cameras and AI tools attach signed Content Credentials. None of that is visible in the picture, and all of it travels with the file when you email it, post it on a forum, sell something, or send an original to a stranger.
Most social networks strip metadata on upload, but email, cloud links, marketplaces and many forums do not. If you want to see what your photo carries before you decide, the EXIF viewer lists every field.
How this remover works
- Upload the photo. Drop it above, paste it, or choose the file. HEIC and AVIF are converted in your browser first.
- The file is rebuilt from its image data only. Every block that is not the picture (EXIF, XMP, IPTC, comments, thumbnails, Content Credentials, anything appended after the image) is left out. The colour profile is kept so the photo looks the same.
- Check the report and download. You see what was removed and the EXIF field count going to zero, then download the clean copy. The upload is deleted right away.
Frequently asked questions
What metadata gets removed?
Everything the file carries that is not the picture itself: EXIF (camera, lens, settings, date and time, GPS location), XMP, IPTC and Photoshop resource blocks, embedded thumbnails, comments, Content Credentials, and any data appended after the image. The pixels are copied through untouched.
Does removing metadata change the image quality?
No. The picture is not re-encoded; the file is rebuilt from its image data only, so the pixels are identical to the original. The colour profile is kept so the photo looks the same everywhere.
Will this remove a watermark?
No. A visible watermark is part of the pixels. Invisible watermarks such as SynthID and the marks some generators add are also written into the pixels, and this tool does not touch pixels.
Does removing metadata make an AI image pass as real?
No. AI image detectors, including ours, read the pixels, not the metadata. Stripping EXIF removes the camera and location record from a real photo; it does not change what a detector sees.
Which formats work?
JPG, PNG and WEBP. HEIC and AVIF photos are converted in your browser first. TIFF and RAW files are not supported here; export a JPG first.
Is the metadata remover free and private?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up. The clean copy is built in memory and sent straight back to you, and the uploaded file is deleted right after. Nothing is stored.
