How to view EXIF data online

What EXIF data is, and what it can tell you
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is the block of information a camera or phone writes into a photo at the moment of capture: the device, the date and time, the exposure settings and, on phones with location enabled, the GPS coordinates. Editing software then adds its own fields on top, so the Software tag and the XMP history often reveal which programs touched the file after the shot.
That makes an EXIF viewer useful for three questions: when and where was this taken, what took it, and who edited it afterwards. It is also a first check on provenance, because AI image generators write their own signatures where the camera data would normally be. EXIF can be edited or stripped, so treat it as strong evidence rather than proof. When it is missing, the AI image detector analyses the pixels instead.

How do I view the EXIF data of a photo online?

Can it show where a photo was taken?
Yes, if the file still contains GPS tags. They are converted to decimal latitude and longitude and linked to a map. Most social platforms strip GPS, so downloaded photos often will not have it.
Why does my photo show no EXIF data?
It was stripped. Screenshots, re-saves, messaging apps and social networks remove EXIF. That does not mean the photo is fake; it means the capture record is gone. Use the original file if you have it.
EXIF vs XMP vs Content Credentials?
EXIF is the capture record. XMP is an editable block used by editors for history and keywords. Content Credentials (C2PA) are a signed origin record from newer cameras and AI tools. This viewer reads all three; the Content Credentials checker goes deeper on the last one.
Can EXIF tell me if an image is AI-generated?
Sometimes: AI tools may name themselves in the Software tag, XMP or Content Credentials, and those are flagged. If the metadata is gone, run the AI detector on the same upload.
