How to tell if an image is GPT-4o Images
GPT-4o / gpt-image-1 is the current high-water mark for photorealism and accurate in-image text — which makes it the single hardest case for pixel-only detectors, including ours. The reliable tell is metadata: OpenAI signs these files with C2PA. Strip that (e.g., by screenshotting) and confident detection gets genuinely hard.
Visual tells
Flawless text is a red flag
If an image contains long, perfectly-rendered text and looks photographic, GPT-4o is a prime suspect — few other generators nail text this well.
Very clean, slightly warm rendering
Outputs are strikingly coherent with a subtle warm cast and no sensor noise.
No camera fingerprint
Despite looking photographic, there is no lens, ISO, or device EXIF — real phone/camera photos usually carry some of that.
Metadata & provenance
| Signal | Present? | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Content Credentials (C2PA) | Yes | OpenAI's newer image model (gpt-image-1, the images you get natively in ChatGPT) also carries C2PA Content Credentials from “OpenAI OpCo, LLC” / the OpenAI Media Service. |
| Invisible watermark | No | No invisible pixel watermark. |
| Camera / EXIF fingerprint | No | The C2PA manifest is the reliable artifact; screenshots and re-encodes remove it. |
How WeDetect flags GPT-4o Images images
This is exactly why we built the provenance layer. Run the original file through the metadata checker: a valid OpenAI C2PA manifest is a confident AI verdict even when the pixels fool the visual model. If it was screenshotted, we tell you the result is inconclusive rather than guess.

This is an estimate, not proof — the detector can be wrong, producing both false positives and false negatives. Don't rely on it as your only source; verify anything important. wedetect.ai is not liable for decisions made from these results. See our Terms.
Frequently asked questions
Why is GPT-4o so hard to detect visually?
It produces coherent, noise-free, text-accurate images with few of the classic artifacts, so pixel-only detectors have little to grab onto. Metadata (C2PA) is the dependable signal.
What if someone screenshots it?
Screenshotting removes the C2PA credentials. We flag that the provenance is missing and lean on the visual model — and we're honest when the result is inconclusive.
