How to tell if an image is Midjourney
Midjourney produces some of the most polished AI imagery on the web, which makes it a common source of “is this real?” questions. Because it embeds no Content Credentials and no invisible watermark, you have to rely on visual tells and a pixel-level detector rather than metadata.
Visual tells
A signature painterly “aesthetic”
Midjourney over-renders — dramatic cinematic lighting, glossy skin, hyper-detailed textures and a dreamy, idealized look that rarely survives in a real photo.
Hands, teeth and small text
Fine structures still warp: extra or fused fingers, oddly even teeth, and gibberish on signs, labels or jewelry engraving.
Backgrounds that dissolve
Look at the edges and far background — detail often melts into abstract, physically-impossible mush.
Symmetry and default 1:1 framing
Unless an aspect ratio was set, outputs skew square with suspiciously balanced, centered compositions.
Metadata & provenance
| Signal | Present? | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Content Credentials (C2PA) | No | Midjourney does not embed C2PA Content Credentials. There is no cryptographic signer to read. |
| Invisible watermark | No | No documented invisible watermark on standard output. |
| Camera / EXIF fingerprint | No | Exports PNG/WebP with no camera EXIF and no device fingerprint — the absence of any camera metadata is itself a soft signal. |
How WeDetect flags Midjourney images
Midjourney art is part of our training mix, so the visual model carries the load here. Because there is no C2PA manifest or watermark to read, our metadata checker will report “no provenance found” — upload to the main detector for the pixel-level probability.

Frequently asked questions
Does Midjourney add a watermark?
No visible or documented invisible watermark is added to standard Midjourney output, so you cannot confirm it from metadata alone — use a visual detector.
Can you tell Midjourney apart from DALL·E?
Not with certainty from the pixels alone. What you can tell reliably is AI vs. real; DALL·E and Firefly additionally sign their files with C2PA, which Midjourney does not.
