How to tell if an image is Google Gemini / Imagen

Google's image models (Imagen and Gemini's native image generation) are the most heavily watermarked — every output carries an invisible SynthID mark and, on originals, C2PA Content Credentials. The nuance: SynthID is verifiable only with Google's own tooling, so for everyone else the practical signals are the C2PA manifest and the pixels.

Visual tells

Photoreal with no visible marks

SynthID is imperceptible — you won't see it — so don't expect a visible logo.

Content Credentials on originals

Unmodified Google AI images carry a C2PA manifest naming Google as the source.

No camera fingerprint

Like other generators, there's no lens/ISO/device EXIF despite a photographic look.

Content Credentials (C2PA)YesGoogle embeds C2PA Content Credentials on its AI images and is a C2PA steering-committee member.
Invisible watermarkYesEvery Google AI image (Imagen, Gemini image generation, Veo video) carries SynthID, an imperceptible pixel watermark. Note: SynthID can only be verified with Google's own detector — third parties like us cannot read it directly — so we rely on C2PA plus the visual model.
Camera / EXIF fingerprintNoC2PA manifest present on original files; SynthID persists in the pixels but is not third-party-readable.

How WeDetect flags Google Gemini / Imagen images

Our metadata checker reads Google's C2PA manifest when present. SynthID itself is Google-proprietary (only Google's SynthID Detector can confirm it), so for stripped files we rely on the pixel model and clearly flag when a result is inconclusive.

Frequently asked questions

Can WeDetect read SynthID?

Not directly — SynthID is verifiable only through Google's own detector. We use C2PA metadata and our visual model instead, and we say so plainly.

Are all Google AI images watermarked?

Google states that its Imagen and Gemini image outputs carry SynthID. C2PA credentials are present on original files but can be stripped.
