Is This Instagram Photo AI?
AI influencers, generated travel shots, product photos that never existed, and profile pictures of people who do not. Here is how to check an Instagram image, a Reel frame or a whole account, starting with the detector.

1. Get the image out of Instagram
Instagram does not offer a download button for other people's posts. On desktop, open the post and use your browser's save on the full-size image; on mobile, a screenshot of the opened post works. For a Reel or Story, pause on a clear, front-facing frame and screenshot that. Crop out the interface so the detector sees only the picture.
Know what you are holding: Instagram strips EXIF, GPS and Content Credentials and re-encodes every upload. A saved Instagram image shows nothing in the EXIF viewer whether it is real or AI. The pixel detector is the check that still works.
2. Run the AI detector
Drop the saved image into the checker above. Above about 85% the model is confident it is AI; below 15% it is confident it is a real photo; in between, the next steps decide. For an account rather than a single post, run two or three photos; a fully AI account scores high on most of them.
3. Reverse image search it
Stolen photos are still more common than generated ones. Search the image with Google Lens or TinEye. If it appears on another account under another name, on a stock site, or years earlier, the profile is fake regardless of what the detector says.
4. Read Instagram's signals
- "AI info" label. Added when the upload carried Content Credentials or IPTC AI tags, or when Meta's own detection fires. Presence is strong evidence. Absence means nothing.
- The account. AI influencers rarely appear in candid video, are never tagged by other people, keep their hands out of frame, and never show the same room twice. A real person's grid has bad lighting, repeated backgrounds and friends' tags.
- The bio and links. Generated accounts usually funnel to a paid platform or a "management" page within the first week.
5. Look for the visual tells
Skin with no pores, teeth that merge, jewellery that fuses into skin, text on clothing or signs that is almost readable, hands with the wrong number of fingers, and a glossy, evenly lit finish across every post. A real person's face pasted onto someone else's photo is a different problem; the deepfake detector is tuned for that.

How can I tell if an Instagram photo is AI?
Save the full-size image (or screenshot a Reel on a clear frame), run it through an AI image detector for a probability, reverse search it, and check the account: posting history, whether the person appears in videos, and whether every image has the same rendered look.
Does Instagram label AI images?
Meta adds an "AI info" label when the upload carries Content Credentials or IPTC AI tags, or when its systems detect signals. Many AI accounts post without those tags, so no label does not mean real.
